Greenhouse Ventilation

Greenhouse Ventilation

Greenhouse ventilation is a central consideration in Alitex designs. Greenhouse ventilation works together with shading, heating and damping-down to maintain greenhouse temperature and humidity. The greenhouse ventilation system you need will depend on the size and type (i.e. desired temperature) of your greenhouse, and proper ventilation ensures that your greenhouse does not exceed the maximum desired temperature and humidity.

The unwritten rule is that a greenhouse should have ventilation equivalent to 17% of floor area, and this is a principle which we at Alitex take to heart. Our experience has shown that a combination of top hung side vents and wide opening roof vents can act together to create a chimney effect, enhancing your greenhouse’s ventilation and optimising your growing environment.

While ventilation is unlikely to be an issue in winter, in summer an unmanaged greenhouse can quickly overheat, with disasterous consequences. On a hot summer’s day greenhouse ventilation on its own may not be much use – it can simply lower humidity, drying out and damaging your plants, and the outside temperature might be hotter than desired anyway. Under these circumstances, greenhouse ventilation must be used in conjunction with shading to manage the greenhouse environment.

Ventilation is a vital factor in choosing the right greenhouse: a greenhouse without adequate ventilation is a waste of money. Even a small 7” by 11” greenhouse needs at least two large ventilation panels, and even then on some days you might need to leave the door open for additional greenhouse ventilation.

Our designs can incorporate greenhouse ventilation systems ranging from simple, manual, glass vents to sophisticated climate control systems depending on your needs.
